Store shelves empty again

All six kids warned me that shelves were bare of essentials... my essentials is COFFEE and DOG FOOD.

Our Amish neighbor has been hunting for deer slugs for a month so he can hunt deer over Thanksgiving. Said he finally found some that he is sharing with 4 other families. Factories making it was shut down due to Covid. He was glad he had gotten a couple deer during bow season.

Things you take for granted as not available like they used to be.

I have 8 spots on shelves that have nothing. Between us and Daughter 4 we have cleared those spots. That is 120 pints of food. In one month gone. Not counting anything from freezers or fresh. Thirty pounds of sweet potatoes gone. I have two for Tday and Daughter is out. I usually buy 50 lbs bags of potatoes for everyone. Can't even order them. Out of 60 lbs of red onions I have maybe one pound left. Had 30 lbs yellow onions , they are gone.

Can you tell we eat?

It will be interesting to see what we run out of completely and what we still have when garden starts coming in. I know I did not get any peas to grow this year so that is a BIG need to grow next spring and again in fall. Hope the garden season is better than it was this year.

Do you have a pantry? Are you stocked for the winter? How are the grocery store shelves in your area?

  1. Grocery shelves are fully stocked here and Aldi even had many choices of TP today. We got everything on our list which has not happened for a couple of months. But, There was not a single turkey in the store so I hope everyone who needed one got one somewhere in town. It is odd how regional these shortages seem to be because our son in your state has not had shortages.

    1. Where is he? I might send a couple kids to stores in that area. Daughter is working instacart and getting nailed by customers because she can't fill their orders but the store web site does not show that it's out of stock

    2. My son works in Dayton but been doing his shopping in Springfield or on base at Wright Patt. One of the workers at the commissary had covid so he quit going in.

  2. Well we are out of toilet paper in stores but we can go to factory and get seconds. We seems to have everything here, just it is getting more expensive. I wish you lived close I would go get 100 lbs of russet's from brother in law and bring them to you.

    1. local potato farm ran out in Aug. I was told what they had did not even keep a month in correct conditions. Been a bad year for crops here.

  3. I have a pantry that is stocked. Shelves look not much bare, considering this is Thanksgiving. However, they put something in place of items that are out! It is not noticeable until you find the spot and find something else there. Not fair.

    1. I've seen that, I understand the why, full shelves calm some down, it just ticks me off though

  4. I have a deep pantry and 2 big freezers and I can tomatoes, fruit, jelly. I've been stocking up since summer. Our freezers are full of chicken, pork and beef and some fruit/veg. I buy canned goods by caselots. We could get snowed in for weeks and be just fine, as long as we have electricity. If I had my wish, I'd have a LP range, but only have an electric.
I avoid the stores, but have gone in over the past 2 weeks. Nothing except TP seems to be out of stock.

    1. We put in LP cook stove for that reason. I have always had a grill for back up when I had an electric stove. Kept it in the garage and in winter would tie a rope to a bar next to the door (was not hooked to house) and connected it to the hand railing at house so even in a blizzard I could get to the grill. Been there and done that

  6. Good heavens woman, feeling your way through a blizzard to use the grill? You ARE hardy pioneer stock. I would probably just live on granola bars until the snow stopped.

  7. I live in S. Cal and the only thing I notice still missing are some cleaning products. I do expect there will be other shortages as the pandemic increases in the next couple of months.
